About Transmissions Standard Transmissions and Clutches
Standard transmissions are of simpler design than automatics and have less that can go wrong with them. Problems with standard transmission can occur when the clutch is improperly adjusted or is not working correctly, when its lubricant level is low, or when the transmission is subject to abuse through racing, in addition to the normal wear and tear that can occur after many tens of thousands of shifts and miles. Lubricant Level Check Checking the lubricant level in a standard transmission usually involves putting the vehicle on a lift and checking the level through a lubricant level plug hole. Always use the gear lubricant recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Transmission Will Not Go Into Gear When a standard transmission will not go into gear, the most common cause is that the clutch is not releasing sufficiently. Perhaps this is due to improperly adjusted clutch linkage. If the vehicle has a hydraulic clutch, perhaps its fluid level is low, or either the clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder is leaking or worn. Noisy Transmission When Shifting In modern standard transmissions, all forward gears have synchronizers to match shaft speeds when shifting so that the gears dont grind when you shift. If your transmission grinds when you upshift or downshift, it is probable that your one or more of your transmissions synchronizers are worn and need replacement. Noisy Transmission When Driving Standard transmissions should operate quietly in all gears. If your vehicles transmission whines excessively or makes loud clunks or grinds, then its internal parts are likely to be damaged. Such a transmission should come out for inspection and repair. Remember, noises that appear to be coming from the transmission might be coming from the engine or from a loose exhaust shield, for instance.
